Caring for Dogs

Having a dog is one of the best things you can do during your life. They will always be there for you and never let you down. A dog exists for nothing more than to see you happy, and we can provide them with our absolute best to return the favour.

Feeding

Proving the best food for your dog is a great way to show how much you care for them. Food generally falls into four categories:

  • Everyday – good quality food that will give your dog all the nutrients they need to live happy and healthy lives.
  • Super Premium – contain additives that have scientifically been developed to be beneficial. Often you will find food that targets certain problems (itchy skin, etc.).
  • Natural – contains fewer ingredients in an effort to replicate a diet that dogs may have had in the wild. These are usually available in a variety of flavours and recipes.
  • Fresh – mostly fresh meat or frozen prepared meals. Will often require some preparation on your behalf.

Bedding

The style of bedding you have will reflect the way that your dog enjoys sleeping. Do they curl up into a ball or lie flat out?

For the curlers, look for a bed that has some side walls. To get the correct size measure your dog from one end to the other when they are sleeping.

For the flat outers, find a bed that is flat and square, or oval, as this will give them the ability to get comfortable in a variety of positions.

Walking

Exercise is very important for dogs, it helps keep them active and fit. If they don’t get the correct amount of exercise they can develop unsavoury habits due to boredom.

The amount of exercise will vary based on the breed. However, for best results walk twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. This will help the dog to sleep during the low activity phases, such as at night and when you are away at work.

Clean Up

While it’s not everyone’s favourite job, keeping your dog’s area clean of mess and rubbish is very important to their wellbeing.

Dog’s will often nominate a section of the yard to do their business in, most of the time it will be far away from where they sleep.

When walking it’s important to carry the correct equipment to take care of life’s most natural function. Always have some doggie bags available and be willing to carry it to a suitable bin for disposal.

Grooming

Besides the occasional scratch and swim, dogs are fairly lazy when it comes to grooming. The amount of care they require depends on the type and length of their coat. Most dogs require a wash with a suitable shampoo once a month and daily brushing. But some, such as ‘oodle breeds require regular hair cuts by a dog grooming specialist.

Many dogs will also require regular nail trimming. If a dog’s nails get too long it can cause many problems. To take care of this you can get it done with a dog grooming service, or buy some clippers and do it yourself.
